12/20/2003 Archived Entry: "Website Updates, Libya Nukes Its Program, The Rest of Iraq is not like Baghdad"
This was another one of those days that took me until 4:00 just to deal with the issues that arrived in my morning email. Afterwards, I cleared several small things out of my to-do list. I did look out the window once today and saw that there were no cars parked at the courthouse. That's when I realized that this is a weekend day. Same as every day, in my life.
In a rather surprising turn of events, Libya has announced that it is abandoning its nuclear weapons program and opening up the facilities for inspection. The news came as a blow to Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, who were all helping to fund the program in exchange for nukes of their own. Libya is where Saddam Hussein moved his nuclear weapons program long ago to get it out of the way of the U.N. weapons inspectors. He still has a few hundred Iraqi nuclear scientists in Libya who, until now, were still working on the project on his payroll. I guess they'll be looking for work, now. Maybe Iran can snatch them up. Iran still thinks it can stall the inspections they are agreeing to long enough to get some nukes made.
In Minnesota, it is illegal to stand around outside any building without a good reason to be there. That's probably why it is so common to see people there jogging in place.
Here's a different view of Iraq from someone who just took his first trip away from Baghdad since the war. It sounds like all the trouble-makers have gone to Baghdad.
