09/22/2004 Archived Entry: "The Woods are Filled with Republicans, Syrian Troop Buildup at WMD Bunkers, Democratic Conspiracy-or Coincidence?, Allawi Makes Nice to Iran, The Spam I Get from Internet Arms Dealers, Bush Wisdom, Today's New Adult Links"

I spent most of the afternoon riding around again. Now that summer has finally come this week, I'm not wasting any opportunities to enjoy it. Last year, winter started in October… The slave and I have been exploring some of the dusty, bumpy dirt roads deep in the forests outside of town. There are houses back there, miles from the nearest paved roads. I'll bet it's fun to live in that kind of isolation. Oddly, to my mind, most of the houses we passed were sporting political signs supporting the Bush/Cheney ticket. Apparently, the Republicans enjoy the overwhelming support of people who live in the woods. Given their location, I'm probably one of maybe ten people who has seen those signs.

I was watching some Arab news channels tonight, and one of them reported that Syria is redeploying 3,000 troops in Lebanon to the Bekaa Valley, in eastern Lebanon next to the Syrian border. The Bekaa Valley is where Syria buried most of Iraq's chemical and biological weapons just before the war began. Do you think there is any significance to moving so many troops there now? Another question occurs to me. Do biological weapons require some sort of care to keep them fresh or something? After being buried in bunkers under the sand for so long, all the germs would be dead, right?

What's the protocol for a scandal of this magnitude? I imagine that the political bloggers are all over this before I'll get it posted, but just in case… I normally stay away from all the controversy related to presidential candidates' war records and whatever else happened or didn't happen or was said or wasn't said umpteen years ago. Outside of the beltway, nobody cares. It isn't relevant to the election. But USAToday's report takes things to a new level.

Bill Burkett, the former Texas National Guard officer who gave CBS the forged "Bush documents," told USAToday that CBS put him in touch with Joe Lockhart, a top aide to John Kerry days before the forged memo was publicized to "offer advice in responding to Republican criticisms about Kerry's Vietnam service." Burkett added that he also talked to former Georgia senator Max Cleland and Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean about it during the past 45 days. The White House's response to these disclosures: "The fact that CBS News would coordinate with the most senior levels of Sen. Kerry's campaign to attack the president is a stunning and deeply troubling revelation,"

I think "stunning" is the right word for it. We have the Democratic presidential campaign conspiring with a forger and a major television network to smear George Bush with fake documents. What happens now? Does John Kerry still get to run for president? For the sake of having an election, will both sides simply pretend it didn't happen? Regardless of who knew that the documents were forged, the fact remains that CBS and the Democrats decided to run with it without really confirming their authenticity. Just the fact of the collusion between the various parties beforehand is a serious matter.

Now, I watch "24" just like everybody else, so I know that it's entirely possible that John Kerry himself knew nothing of this. But somebody had better figure out a plausible spin to put on this whole thing. I don't think that the initial spin offered, (that the fake documents never came up in the conversations CBS set up between Burkett and the Democratic campaign), sounds believable at all. They've got to get their heads together and come up with something better than that. And they should probably fire some scapegoats. Maybe prosecute somebody. All the usual stuff.

Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi said in an interview published Monday that Iranian interference in some Iraqi affairs did not mean Iran's government was involved. "Rather it comes from some circles that support particular religious tendencies," he said. "That was the case with the Moqtada al-Sadr issue, which we treated not as a matter of a religious movement but as a violation of the rule of law, which is something we cannot tolerate," Allawi said.

That's a nice, diplomatic thing to say, but it certainly does not reflect the truth of the matter. Moqtada al-Sadr received his funding to pay his Mehdi Army, and the weapons to arm them from Iran. Official Iranian "diplomats" in Baghdad facilitated the funding and arms shipments. Moreover, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards are running training camps for al Qaeda outside some of their bases near their border with Iraq and sending those terrorists into Iraq to carry out sabotage and assassination attempts. Clearly, the government of Iran sponsors the anti-government militant factions operating in Iraq. Their funding, and shipments of arms, ammunition and terrorists into Iraq are probably the sole reason the conflict continues.

I'm starting to get more interesting spam in my email. Lately, I've been receiving messages entitled "How one can become a terrorist?" Here's the text of the message:
You're invited to shop for large selection of bombs and different kinds of rockets such as surface-to-air, surface-to-surface and weaponry available at reduced price. With the following types of rockets you will be able to commit terrorist attacks, destroy buildings, electric power stations, bridges, factories and anything else that comes your mind. Most items are in stock and available for next day freight delivery in the USA. Worldwide delivery is available at additional cost. Prices are negotiable.

The message gave the URL for a website, and an alternate IP address in case the website becomes unavailable, as well as an ICQ number. I deleted the messages off my server without visiting the website, but I have to admit to being curious enough to WANT to look. Am I the only one getting unsolicited messages like this? Does it seem credible that arms dealers are sending out bulk mailings? That sounds like something only the government would be silly enough to do.

I think the American people—I hope the American—I don't think, let me—I hope the American people trust me. –Today's deep thought to ponder from President Bush
