U.S. forces killed one of Zarqawi’s top lieutenants, a Palestinian, in a targeted assassination in Baghdad Thursday. Abu Anas al-Shami, whose real identity was Omar Yusef Juma’a, was a Palestinian terrorist operations expert from the West Bank town of Tulkarm. Al-Shami was killed by an American missile in Baghdad’s Shiite slum district, Sadr City. In response to news of his death, traditional Muslim “mourners’ tent” sprang up in the Haj Hassan district of the Jordanian capital, Amman. In Palestine, Yasser Arafat ordered Juma’a’s kinfolk in Tulkarm to refrain from setting up a mourners’ tent lest the true identity of a top al Qaeda operative be blown and his Palestinian movement implicated. I guess if he prevents the relatives from having the funeral, Arafat can maintain the fiction that Juma'a wasn't who he was, or something. In Jordan, the visitors paying homage to the fallen terrorist lieutenant included Jordanian Palestinian notables, Palestinian Authority officials and officers based in Jordan, and Jordanian lawmakers, members of the fundamentalist Islamic Front.
Juma'a's most recent assignment from Zarqawi was the sensitive mission of implanting a major al Qaeda team in the Shiite Sadr City of Baghdad. Zarqawi calculated that by quickly filling the vacuum left by the radical Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr’s defeat in Najef, al Qaeda would draw in Mehdi Army militiamen deprived of their leader and establish a formidable anti-US anti-government presence in the Iraqi capital. By killing the Palestinian terrorist mastermind, the Americans stymied this plan.

A man who spoke about his fear of witches says he's concerned his comments will prompt the county's child-welfare agency to conduct an unwarranted investigation of his family. Jake Jenkins said a story in Wednesday's Times Leader made him sound "like I'm crazy." He didn't deny talking to a reporter about what he believes is his battle against evil, but he said he thought his name wouldn't be used and that he could give a "generic story about the witches out there." "Now I'm going to be under investigation because the story makes me sound like a lunatic."Jenkins, 51, on Wednesday talked about unnamed witches he said are after him and his family. He told of how he keeps his family, which includes his wife and eight children, ages 22 to 1, mostly in the house. The house has been fortified with bars and beams. To ward off the witches, he has adorned a tree stump in his front yard with wooden stakes, some of which point to where witches live in the neighborhood, he said. On Thursday, he said he felt his efforts to keep witches away "are working." His primary concern now, he said, is how his comments are viewed by school and child-welfare officials. Jenkins also was concerned about the impact the story might have on his home-schooling of his children, something he said he's been doing since the 1980s.
Moral of the story: if you know everybody thinks you're nuts, don't confirm their suspicions by giving it all away to the press.
KHOST, Sept 23: One of the largest Pakhtun tribes in southeastern Afghanistan threatened on Thursday to torch the homes of voters who fail to elect incumbent Hamid Karzai in next month’s presidential vote. "All the Terezay tribes’ people should vote for Hamid Karzai...if anyone from Terezay tribe votes for other candidates, the tribe will burn their houses," the tribe warned on local radio in the border province of Khost.
In a tape of the broadcast, the statement urged both male and female members of the tribe to take part in the polls and throw their support behind Mr Karzai, a fellow Pakhtun. "All of Terezay tribe people, including males and females, have to vote for Hamid Karzai because he is the only suitable person for the presidential post," it said. The Terezays number between 120,000 and 150,000 and are scattered in the mountains of southern and eastern Afghanistan.
