I received an email related to my earlier postings on marrying my daughter. It said:
"In regards to your "Marrying Off Your Daughter" article, you mentioned the groom-to-be's intention of joining the military soon after the marriage. It seems that he believes he must first be a US citizen before he is eligible for active service. He may be relieved to know that you do not, in fact, need to be a citizen first to join.
Anyone, anywhere in the world can simply go to the nearest US Embassy and commit to service. It is called an Immigration Enlistment Package. You join, they send you to bootcamp, and you get full citizenship in eight years. That's four years shorter then the requirment of normal immigrant.
I have met during my four year term of service; 4 Kenyans, 2 Nigerians and 1 Panamanian that had all joined under that very Package. It is relatively easy (as I was told) and none were even required to be fluent in English. So unless his plan is to be an Officer (which does require citizenship first) he can freely join, without eventually making your daughter a divorcé.
I hope this complicates things,

President Bush told Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly of the "O'Reilly Factor" program that Washington will never let Tehran acquire atomic weapons. The Bush administration has charged that oil-rich Iran does not need a civilian nuclear program for energy and that Tehran is actually seeking to acquire nuclear weapons. Asked again whether the United States would let Iran develop that capability, Bush replied: "No, we've made it clear, our position is that they won't have a nuclear weapon."He does have a point. Iran's claims that their nuclear program is needed to generate electricity are patently absurd. They could burn their own oil to handle all their electricity needs for the next hundred years. When you combine their intractability on this issue with their testing of longer and longer range ballistic missiles, it's hard to doubt that Iran's intention in all this is to develop nuclear weapons to arm those missiles with. Iran continues to vow the destruction of the nation of Israel. Will diplomatic efforts to persuade Iran to give up their nuclear program prevail? The Israelis aren't betting their lives on it. They recently made a deal to buy 500 of the American 1-ton "bunker busters" smart bombs. If questioned about the intended use for such bombs, I suppose they can always say "we need them to generate electricity."
This is just a thought about the upcoming Presidential debates between Kerry and Bush. They may be Kerry's last and best hope for beating Bush in the election. This is all about the voters who have not already decided whom they will vote for. They're not happy with Bush, but Kerry hasn't given them what they want. They want to know what the Plan is. Kerry's rhetoric is always very critical of everything Bush has done, but it's empty without a Plan. A promise to raise our taxes doesn't cut it. A promise to have our troops out of Iraq in four years doesn't cut it. Promises for some huge spending programs without an explanation of where the money for them will come from doesn't cut it. Pie in the sky dreams about more support and cooperation from foreign governments don't cut it. The fence-riders want to know what Kerry's plan is to deal with terrorism, to have Iraq turn out well, to strengthen the economy… If Kerry has any substance at all, he must have a Plan beyond "Bush is bad, I'm not Bush." I hope he can come up with something before the debates.
I'm hopeful. I know there is a lot of ambition in Washington, obviously. But I hope the ambitious realize that they are more likely to succeed with success as opposed to failure. –Today's deep thought to ponder from President Bush
