I noticed something a little bit weird today, and I wonder what it means. Whenever I feel like reading other people's blogs, I go to Top Blogs and just scroll through the main list of the top 300 blogs, clicking on whomever I feel like reading at the moment. Top Blogs resets their list once/week, so normally, in the first five or six days following a reset, I'll end up seeing blogs with no traffic listed in the top 300. Well, Top Blogs reset last night, and already all of the top 300 blogs listed there show traffic in to Top Blogs. That doesn't mean that Top Blogs is suddenly more popular. It means that all of the other blogs listed there are suddenly more popular, getting more visitors than usual. What would account for that?
On Sunday, someone blew up the chief operations commander for the Hamas terrorist organization, in Syria. Before deporting him to Lebanon in 1991, the late Yitzhak Rabin called Ezz-Eldin Sheikh al-Khalil “the snake’s head,” singling him out as the terror master who raised and handled Hamas’ most accomplished terror operatives. Yasser Arafat used to claim in the early days of the current Palestinian confrontation with Israel that it was not he who pulled the strings of terror but Sheikh al-Khalil from Jordan.
Syrian president Bashar Assad was left red-faced in more ways than one. According to "official leaks" in Damascus in the past week, he had expelled all Hamas commanders from his capital and closed their command centers and disconnected their telephones. So why was al-Khalil was caught outside his home in Damascus? And how was an alien entity able to operate under the noses of Syrian intelligence in a Syrian city where terrorists had always been safe? Al Khalil was tracked as he left his home in the largely Palestinian Zahraa district of Damascus by watchers who knew which of his three cars he would step into and the number of his mobile phone. By answering the phone when it rang, he gave the signal to detonate the explosives already planted in his car. Read more on the matter here. The assassination was part of a tangled web of diplomatic maneuvers too complicated for me to keep track of. I'm just a simple man.
The first attacks using the Windows JPEG flaw have shown up on adult-oriented newsgroups, according to warnings issued by Internet security organizations today.
Usenet-related site EasyNews published a notice today that pornographic images containing hidden code were posted to at least 10 of the alt.binaries newsgroups, including alt.binaries.erotica.breasts and alt.binaries.erotica.beanie-babies. The images first started to be posted at around 7 p.m. on Sunday, according to Godzilla, an administrator at EasyNews.The corrupted images, which look exactly the same as a normal image, exploits the recently-announced JPEG flaw in Windows’ Graphic Device Interface Plus (GDI+) with a buffer overflow attack. “Once this JPEG overflowed GDI+, it phoned home, connected to an FTP site and downloaded almost 2 megs of stuff,” stated Godzilla. After downloading the files, the malicious code sets the infected computer up as a server and installs an IRC client. According to Godzilla, 93 users were logged into the FTP site when he checked it last.
In layman's terms, this means that you can now infect your computer with a Trojan merely by viewing an infected image on the Internet. It doesn't have to be a porn picture, of course. It could be an advertising banner, or an invisible 1x1 pixel dot on the page. If you're using Windows, MAKE SURE you are running the latest version with the latest patches. You can do that HERE.
Syria has accused Israel of terrorism following the death of a leader in the Hamas terrorist organization in a car bombing in Syria on Sunday (see above), three weeks after Hamas killed 16 Israeli civilians in bus bombings Israel blamed on Hamas exiles in Damascus. It still amazes me, after all this time, that there are governments with such skewed sense of values over the distinction between killing a terrorist, and killing women and children riding a bus. Killing a terrorist is terrorism, so it's bad. Killing women and children is a martyrdom operation, so it's good. That's the distinction they make. How can efforts to hold talks between governments accomplish anything at all when the words you speak carry such different meanings and are based on values so alien to one another? There is no common ground you can use for a starting point.
Syria's state radio on Monday said Israel's practices were keeping the region in a "state of tension and danger" and called on the international community to restrain the Jewish state. "It is not in any one's interest in the region or outside that silence on the Israeli aggressive and terrorist practices and killings and destructive operations against the Palestinian people continues," the radio said in a commentary. If Israelis would stop taking actions to prevent attacks against them, we could get this whole thing over with much more easily.
Hamas, an Islamist movement bent on destroying Israel, has killed hundreds of Israelis in suicide bombings in a four-year-old uprising in which more than 2,500 Palestinians have also died. Hamas obviously views the sacrifice of ten Palestinian lives for each murder of a Jew to be an acceptable trade. Israel had warned it would renew an assassination campaign against Hamas leaders wherever they were after bus bombings on Aug. 31 that killed 16 people in the city of Beersheba. It would seem that they are doing exactly as they said they would. Apparently, it's not safe to be a terrorist leader, even in Syria.
This endorsement for a new blog is probably going to strike you as strange. And I doubt if the writer of that blog will appreciate it if he ever discovers the bad company he's fallen into. But I just found a blog called "Confessions of an Ageing Priest" that really struck me with a sense of…forlorn honesty, I guess. As I write this, he only has made two entries, but I already feel as if I know the goodness of the man, and understand his need to publish his journal. I guess I'm sharing this with you because I hope that someone besides me will read him. I guess he touched me, somehow.
