03/09/2005 Archived Entry: "Trading Syria for Iran, My Thoughts on Minimum Wage, Republicans Announce Initiative to Raise Minimum Wage to $112.15/Hour, Is This How the Religious Right Got Control of the Government?, Today's New Adult Links"

The little refrigerator in the office stopped working a few days ago. I keep it stocked with various diet beverages that I like. I like to keep them at just the right temperature where they slush up a little when I open them. I had to get dressed today, so I decided to visit the new Lowe's store that opened up in the college town near here. I try to avoid shopping as much as possible because I'm an impulse buyer. The new refrigerator was only $100, which is good. While I was there, I also ordered two new garage doors with leaded glass windows and two new garage door openers. And the slave liked a fancy gazebo thing that will cover our patio so we can go out there when it's raining. I'm arranging to have that delivered when they install the garage doors.

The new refrigerator didn't work either. Nor did a lamp that I plugged in to the same extension cord. So, we followed the wire trail. It wasn't too complicated. That extension cord was plugged into a multiple outlet thing under my desk that was turned off. Turning it on made my computer speakers work again, too. We hauled the old refrigerator back into the house and put it in the dining room. It's working now. You can never have too much refrigerated space in a house, right? It's all good, I guess. If that switch hadn't gotten turned off, I wouldn't be getting new garage doors and a gazebo.

Does it really matter if Syria leaves Lebanon? Judging by the size of the rallies organized there by the Hezbollah terrorist organization, the Shiite majority in Lebanon lines up behind the terrorists. They plan several more rallies in different cities in upcoming days to show their power. It would appear that Hezbollah-approved candidates would win most of the spots in a democratic election. Since Hezbollah is Iran's main international terrorist arm in the world, it looks to me like this whole exercise simply exchanges Syrian control of Lebanon for Iranian control of Lebanon.

Hezbollah is the best organized and trained armed terrorist militia targeted by the US-led war on terror – bar none, including al Qaeda, it controls a strong territorial base with the solid logistical, strategic and financial backing of Iran. The Hizballah is the Iraqi guerrillas’ senior recruiting agent in Lebanon and Syria. Its intelligence network runs efficient cells from Latin America to West and East Africa and the Persian Gulf; its operatives are dug in deep among the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and Israeli Arabs. Hizballah maintains active ties with al Qaeda in Europe, Iran, Pakistan and Chechnya. If Bush and Chirac succeed in ridding Lebanon of Syria, Hizballah and its Iranian sponsors will come up smiling.

The Americans may soon be faced with an interesting question. If democratic elections result in nations being ruled by terrorist organizations, does that mean that America is automatically at war with those countries? The same question is likely to come up in regard to Palestine. Abu Mazen has promised to let groups like Hamas and Fatah-al Aqsa Brigades run candidates in the Palestinian general elections on July 17. Once they are entrenched in the Palestinian political establishment, who will disarm them or dismantle their organizations?

My thoughts on the Minimum Wage: Recently, there was another effort to raise the Minimum Wage – from $5.15/hour to $7.25/hour. Why do the politicians keep trying to do that? If the minimum is raised, U.S. employers who pay the minimum would have to raise their prices to compensate. If the minimum wage worker (and everyone else) has to pay more for goods and services, did the minimum wage worker benefit from his pay increase? He makes more, but he can't buy more. And everyone who makes more than the minimum can buy less because everything costs more. That's not good. Suppose the U.S. employer CAN'T raise his prices because he's competing with goods manufactured in other countries that didn't raise the minimum wage. A higher minimum wage forces that employer to choose between going out of business because he can't compete, or relocating his manufacturing to countries where labor is cheaper. Either choice puts the U.S. minimum wage worker out of work. That's not good, either. This country has raised the minimum wage several times in the past and the results I've described have always been the consequence. Cause and effect. Don't politicians understand cause and effect? Why do they think that they'll get different effects if they just keep trying?

Update on Minimum Wage Bill from Crosseyedbear Blog Republicans Propose Increasing Minimum Wage to $112.15/Hour
Washington (C-BN) In a surprise move, Senate Republicans have reversed course and offered a new amendment to raise the minimum wage. Previous proposed minimum wage legislation, voted down yesterday, was attached to a pending bill related to bankruptcy legislation. On Monday, the Senate, led by Republicans, voted down two separate minimum wage amendments. The first, proposed by Senator Ted Kennedy (D-Ma), proposed a minimum wage increase of $2.10 from the current $5.15. Senator Rick Santorum, (R-Pa), had proposed an alternative increase of $1.10. Both plans were defeated.

Today, Senator Santorum reversed course and announced the Republicans were proposing a new minimum wage increase of $107 per hour, which would raise the minimum wage to $112.15 per hour. Startled Democrats quickly met behind closed doors to formulate their response, which was not long in coming.

Senator Robert Byrd, (D-W. Va), the senior Democratic Senator, led the charge, announcing "The Republican plan is an unpleasant surprise. Unpleasant indeed, just like when the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939. Surprises in politics are never good; I don't like it, not one bit." Senator John Kerry, (D-Ma), added "The Republican plan is a risky scheme to make rich people out of poor people, and increase the number of Republicans. This plan is dead on arrival. I might vote for it, but ultimately I'll vote against it." Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, (D-Ca), said "Democratic priorities are still clear: while we will fight to get the economy back on track, create jobs, and help unemployed workers, we don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. We don't want poor people so affluent they don't need us anymore; we just want to keep them happy enough to continue to vote for us. The last thing we need is more wealthy Americans."

Senator Santorum defended the proposed increase, saying "If they thought a $2.10 raise was better than a measley $1.10, well, $107 is way better than $2.10. Ha! Let 'em chew on that for a while. We'll just see who likes the poor people more. Honestly, I don't know why we didn't think of it before. Tax revenue will skyrocket, which will eliminate the budget deficit, pay for the war in Iraq, and solve the Social Security crisis at the same time. Heck, with minimum wage workers earning over $233,000 a year, there won't be any need for Social Security." When questioned about the possibility of $300 hamburgers, Senator Santorum said "We don't believe that would be the case; I mean seriously, that's plain ridiculous. Who would pay $300 for a hamburger?"

The very secretive Council for National Policy – Is this how the religious right got control of our government? It's a long and interesting read.
