08/31/2005 Archived Entry: "Syrian President Assad Holed Up Avoiding Arrest, Syria Exporting Terrorists to Jordan, Most Internet Porn Coming from Russia and China Now, Maine to Endorse Discrimination, Today's New Adult Links"

I've lived without the Internet for the past week. My router went down and I couldn't get online. Sort of an unwelcome vacation from work. I had to listen to the radio in my car to get weather predictions. I had to look in the paper to learn that I have not won the lottery. I took advantage of all the slack time and had two of my vehicles repaired, and a third one maintained. I played computer games. I watched movies on tv. I went for motorcycle rides. It was like pretending to be Amish. After I got the router fixed, I learned that there had been a hurricane and that New Orleans is flooded.

I'm really mad at Yahoo. Again. Last year it was over fraudulent charges Yahoo made to one of my credit cards. Now, they've terminated my Yahoo account, meaning that I can't access the Yahoo groups I moderate. Meaning that those groups will die because I can't approve the messages the members post. They gave me no explanation, and they've been careful not to provide any way to contact them anywhere on Yahoo.

Syrian President Assad Gives Orders for Civil War in Lebanon, Lebanese Political Leaders Flee
U.N. investigators of the assassination of Prime Minister Hariri in Lebanon are wrapping up the investigation. It looks like they have found plenty of proof that Assad gave the order and the assassination was carried out by Syrian intelligence. Jamil al-Sayyed, former chief of Genera Security Directorate, Ali Hajj, ex-head of police and Raymond Azar, ex-chief of military intelligence have been arrested as suspects. Word that the UN inquiry team was finishing its work was enough to put many Lebanese leaders to flight last week. Most went to Paris. The Druze minister Hamdan was not the only fugitive; Saad Hariri, ruling party leader and son of the slain politician, decamped with his family, as did editors of big Lebanese papers. Most Lebanese sources expect the publication of the UN team’s final report next week to touch off a round of liquidations against prosecution witnesses.

A second wave of arrests of Lebanese security officials was made overnight Tuesday Aug. 30 on the orders of the UN team investigating the Hariri assassination headed by German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis. The Assad regime in Syria is in a panic. Syrian agents and Hizballah officers in Lebanon are seen handing out weapons to militants, the first sign that Assad has decided to react to the threat closing in on him by igniting fresh civil bloodshed. The Mehlis probe achieved its second breakthrough when a number of defectors from Syrian and Lebanese security and intelligence services from the time Damascus dominated the country also reached Paris this week. They handed French intelligence incriminating materials and testimony on the part played by the Syrian president and Lebanese president Emil Lahoud in the Hariri murder. A high-ranking French intelligence official said that this evidence and the defectors’ willingness to testify against both presidents provides grounds for international arrest warrants against them. Syrian President Assad has cancelled his trip to the U.N. for fear that he'll be arrested.

The investigation into the al Qaeda rocket attacks on the American naval vessels USS Ashland and USS Kearsage docked in Aqaba Friday August 19 is yielding some interesting information. All the 12 detainees linked to the Katyusha rockets attacks on US warships in Aqaba – 5 Egyptians, 5 Iraqis and 2 Syrians - infiltrated Jordan from Syria on forged passports. Fresh intelligence input confirmed on Tuesday, August 23, that squads of terrorists were still pouring across from Syria. It's looking like Syria is earnest about using its al Qaeda mercenaries to bring down the Jordanian government. Syria has now assumed the role of supplier of al Qaeda terrorists fighting in Jordan, Egypt, and Israel. The networks functioning in Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Sinai and the Gaza Strip defer to a single command base in Syria which coordinates their operations. Read more on this at Debka Net Weekly. Most of the Internet porn in Australia now comes from Russia and China. Electronic Frontiers Australia, basing its statement on the number of complaints made to Australia regulators, showed that Internet content regulation in the country had simply pushed offensive content overseas. EFA Executive Director Irene Graham, whose group is against Internet censorship, argues that "adults should be able to view Australian content that has been produced and hosted in Australia." "There's a dramatic increase in the amount of foreign-hosted content," Graham said. "They can't do anything more about it than they did before, which was, if you don't like it, use a filter.”

Those who advocate censorship in the U.S. might find the same thing if someone funded a study. Many formerly American companies have relocated overseas in the past few years to countries that don't base their laws on religious doctrine, and many others have closed down. As a reviewer for an adult search engine, I can vouch that most of the new porn sites submitted these days are foreign. Censorship efforts in America are succeeding in shifting the bulk of the adult Internet monies to foreign businesses. I don't understand why that is a desirable goal. It doesn't make porn any less available on the net. It simply means that the billions of dollars spent annually on adult sites goes to other countries, increasing our trade deficit. Do you see any sense of logic here? I can't figure out the real object of the pro-censorship movement in America. I suspect it's just an excuse for fundraising from the rubes who don't know that people can access porn just as easily from a foreign website as from a domestic one, people who think that American censorship will actually mean less porn on the net.

Earlier this year, Maine passed a law to protect people from discrimination in employment, housing, education, public accommodations and credit based on their sexual orientation. Sounds like a decent law if you believe in the Constitutional premise that all are equal. But the Christian Taliban in Maine don't approve of equal treatment for people who aren't just like them, and they've gotten enough signatures to put it back on the ballot this November. Will voters in Maine repeal the law? Maybe they could pass a law making it legal to capture and enslave gays, if they decide that gays shouldn't have the same rights as citizens.
