09/08/2005 Archived Entry: "I'm Not a Fan of the People of New Orleans, FEMA Setting Up Camps for New Orleans Detainees"

I must be a really callous person because I'm having a hard time feeling any sympathy for the people still in New Orleans. A couple of days before Hurricane Katrina made landfall, the residents of New Orleans were ordered to evacuate the city. Most did. A lot of people chose to disobey the government and stay behind in the city. I'm sure they had their reasons. Some hoped to loot while authorities were elsewhere. Some hoped to rape while authorities were elsewhere. Some, knowing why their neighbors were staying, stayed behind to protect their property from them. The news has been showing a lot of people in New Orleans spraying invective at the government over their conditions. I've been amazed at the absence of any sense of personal responsibility whatsoever. They chose to stay after being told to leave. Why blame the government for their suffering?

Another person pointing fingers at the federal government is the mayor of New Orleans. His evacuation plan did not include any form of public transportation for constituents who didn't have cars. They didn't have any choice. They stayed. But that's his fault, not the fault of the federal government. He didn't ask for help from the federal government until after it was far too late for a lot of people. He apparently did not understand that the federal government will not send troops to invade a state until after it is invited. Still, I'm sure things would have progressed more swiftly had the residents of his city not been shooting at the first responders. There was a significant delay waiting for armed forces to arrive to protect the rescuers. My impression is that New Orleans was a poorly managed city with incompetent city officials. Given the fact that it was engineered to withstand only small hurricanes, combined with incompetent city management, this disaster was inevitable.

It will be interesting to see if they decide to rebuild the city under sea level again. It's hard for me to see that as anything more than a real waste of money and resources. Some day, another hurricane would come and wipe it all out again. It was a bad idea in the first place. It's still a bad idea.

I Just Got Back From A FEMA Detainment Camp - That link leads to a very interesting narrative. I'd been thinking of the "relocatees from New Orleans" as "refugees," though I've heard some flack about using that term. Apparently, it's Been Decided that it is politically incorrect to allude to American citizens being refugees. After reading the narrative above, I guess the more accurate term would be "detainees." FEMA apparently intends to keep them prisoners in these camps for five months. I don't think the refugees know this yet. I guess they should have evacuated New Orleans when they were ordered to, BEFORE the levies broke. Those who did avoided the government's enforced hospitality.

I've been without Internet access for several days again, which accounts for my lack of blogging. I've got it working again, maybe I can start getting caught up on my work. I'm unprepared to write about any world events, but I thought I should get something posted. I've got a busy weekend coming up, so it will be a few days before I have another opportunity.
