I don't think that ANY taxpayer money should go to rebuild New Orleans. I got my calculator out and did some math and came up with some ridiculous numbers. The government is saying that it will cost about $200 billion to rebuild the city. There are about 125,000 households in the city. That works out to $1.6 million/household. The average household income in New Orleans is about $27,000, so $1.6 million/household is equivalent to 59 years-worth of income. A significant portion of that income is welfare, but let's ignore that. The crime rate in New Orleans is about double the national average. I'm just throwing that fact out with the thought that people who don't want to be victimized might choose to live elsewhere. If the Bush administration is serious about spending $200 billion of our tax money in response to the flooding of New Orleans, perhaps it would be better to just give $1.6 million to each household there with the understanding that they will use their fortunes to start new lives on higher ground, somewhere else. $200 billion means that every household in American will pay about $800 in taxes to bail out New Orleans. Wouldn't you rather see that money used to make all the New Orleans families millionaires? I'm already paying my share for New Orleans. My homeowners insurance company just sent me a new bill. They've doubled my yearly premium, even though I don't live within a thousand miles of New Orleans.

Palestinian terrorists are preparing for war against Israel, big time. After Israel pulled its troops and settlelments from Gaza, the Hamas terrorist group moved in, in force, and now controls the border with Egypt. Hamas bomb squads have been busy demolishing the Gaza-Egyptian border walls since Friday, working around the clock. Since Israel turned over border security to Egypt and the Palestinian authority last week, an estimated 500-700 armed and highly-trained men have infiltrated Gaza through Sinai to boost the ranks of the Hamas and Jihad Islami. They are believed to include Palestinian terrorists from Lebanon, as well as al Qaeda operatives and fugitives who have been on the run from Egyptian security since the Taba and Sharm al Sheikh bombing attacks. Israel’s AMAN suspects that Iranian Revolutionary Guards spies may have been smuggled in with the traffic, their assignment being to establish an Iranian terrorist infrastructure like the one Tehran has set up in Iraq. Tons of explosives, rockets, RPGs and missiles have been shifted from Sinai to Gaza by Hamas and Jihad Islami terrorists in the past several days, and endeavor that would have taken a year if the terrorists still had to use the smuggling tunnels.
With the border between Palestine and Egypt now under terrorist control, Hamas has gone on a weapons buying spree. It has placed orders in Eastern Europe for:
1. 3,000 automatic rifles. The new supply will give Hamas a total of 10,000 Kalashnikovs, enough for thousands of new recruits.
2. Hundreds of AT-23 Sagger anti-tank missiles.
3. SAM-14 Strela anti-air missiles – quantity unknown.
4. Improved Qassam surface missiles.
5. Land mines of different types – quantity unknown.
6. More than 250 tons of explosives.Iranian and Hizballah agents – as well as al Qaeda buyers – are using their contacts with local gangs of arms traffickers in Serbia, Slovakia, Montenegro, Croatia and Kosovo, to fill Palestinian stores with the new weaponry. The arms are shipped out of ports in Montenegro and Croatia to Yemen and Sudan, thence to Sinai and into the Gaza Strip, unchecked by Egyptians or Palestinian security. In preparation for the upcoming war with Israel, Hamas has begun stringing out a line of military positions along Gaza’s borders with Egypt and Israel, similar to the Hizballah bases along Lebanon’s border with Israel. Hamas operatives have taken over some former IDF positions in the Rafah sector and the former Israeli coastal location of Rafiah Yam. Hamas units have taken up position at the former Morag, Dugit and Elei Sinai and appear to be erecting military installations.
The Israeli government abandoned its security in Gaza and the Gazan/Egyptian border bowing to the demands of the Bush administration. Israeli intelligence predicted that Hamas would use the opportunity to take control of that void. It has. I'm wondering what the Bush administration's master plan is in all this, since it went to such great effort to get Israel to evacuate the area. There IS a master plan behind all this, right? It's not just stupidity? I'd hate for it to turn out to be another Bush stupidity.
Al Qaeda is trying hard to provoke a civil war in Iraq before December 15th, the earliest date a general election in Iraq could leave the Shiites holding most of the cards. Al Qaeda has killed thousands of Shiites in recent months in terrorist attacks, hoping that they will go after the Sunnis in retaliation. The Iraqi Shiite resolve to refrain from retaliating for al Qaeda’s brutal terrorist acts against their community has progressively weakened. Two weeks ago, to avoid plunging Iraq into a bloody sectarian conflict, Shiite religious and secular leaders undertook a deliberate policy of self-restraint – even after al Qaeda massacred some 1,000 Shiite pilgrims at the Imam Mousa al Kadhim shrine in Iraq on August 31. But the unrelenting carnage since has spurred small armed groups of the Shiite Badr and Wolves Brigades into action. For the first time, they have been stealing up on al Qaeda safe houses and killing their occupants. Shiite police-makers’ plans for full-scale revenge were laid aside very temporarily – only until they were in full command of government in Baghdad. They have no doubt that this will be the upshot of the October 15 national referendum on the constitution and the general election two months later. Once in power, they intend wreaking full revenge on al Qaeda on behalf of the Iraqi nation, rather than as a sectarian community. I hope they can hold it together until then. In one sign of the stress of such self-restraint, Iraqi Shiite supreme leader, Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, issued a rare fatwa Thursday night calling for a sweeping Shiite boycott of Iraqi’s Sunni neighbors Jordan and Saudi Arabia. He accused both kingdoms of fostering Sunni terrorism against Shiites in Iraq. His decree marks a drastic heightening of Sunni-Shiite animosity, bringing it a step closer to the sectarian conflict al Qaeda is striving to stir up in Iraq.

North Korea agreed Monday to stop building nuclear weapons and allow international inspections in exchange for energy aid, economic cooperation and security assurances. The last time North Korea made an agreement like this was during the Clinton administration. It got the aid it wanted, but continued its nuclear weapons program in violation of the agreement. This time, I hope the countries involved withhold the economic incentives until they know that the nuclear inspections program is working as it should.
