10/04/2005 Archived Entry: "Sore Butt, New Orleans Doesn't Want Welfare People Back, U.N. Finds Syria Behind Hariri Assassination, Al Qaeda Has Conquered 20% of Sinai, Iran Contracting Killings of U.S. Soldiers in Iraq, Story of Religious Hypocrisy, Today's New Adult Links"
I took the slave for a two-day ride on my Harley last weekend. It turned into three days when her butt got too sore to ride home Sunday. She wanted me to stop every 30 miles for a twenty minute break. We ended up spending a second night in a motel, finally getting home late Monday. I was concerned about her mental health, too. Every once in a while during our ride, she would point off in the distance and say, "trees." I don't know what that meant, but I'd spend the next ten miles worrying about it. And once when we stopped for a break, she got off the bike saying "air, I need air." Air is NOT something in short supply when you're riding on a motorcycle. That thought preoccupied my mind for the rest of the ride home.
I got an email from another reader regarding New Orleans, who wrote:
"While 1.6 million a person sounds like a great idea you're missing a major point. It's not about giving people money they've lost, it's about rebuilding a place to MAKE and SPEND money. Go ask Texas and Arkansas and Tennessee if they would like to have everyone in New Orleans move in."
I don't think spending $1.6 million of our tax money per household on New Orleans is a great idea at all. If it's about building a place for people to spend money, the government should build a $200 billion amusement park somewhere ABOVE sea level. Or use the money to give every family in America $800 to spend at Christmas. Or build some refineries so gas and heating oil prices will come down. Or spend the money on small business incentives to create new jobs. Or better yet, don't spend that money at all, since we don't have it and would have to borrow it. If New Orleans is a good place for businesses to make money, business will move back in regardless of whether the government rebuilds the city at taxpayer expense. It'll just shift to property on higher ground. You do make a good point about Texas, Arkansas and Tennessee not wanting all those welfare people from New Orleans as permanent residents. That sucks for them, but they're going to be stuck regardless. Building cheap public housing for poor people probably isn't on New Orlean's wish list for the $200 billion. They don't want those people back. Texas got lucky when Hurricane Rita came along and they could shove all those refugees off to Oklahoma.
The U.N. investigation into the assassination of the Lebanese leader Hariri has proven that Syria ordered and carried out the assassination. Detlev Mehlis reported to the UN secretary general Kofi Annan and the Security Council that he has finished his business in Damascus and would not be returning. He had gathered all the evidence he needs to indict two of Syrian President Assad’s close kinsmen, his brother Maher, head of the presidential guard brigade, and brother-in-law, Assef Shawqat, who is married to his sister Bushra, for involvement in the assassination plot against the Lebanese leader. The clincher was obtained in a Lebanese security forces swoop on the MTC Touch mobile phone company in Beirut Sept. 27. The officers copied data from eight telephone lines and took several employes away for questioning. These lines were allegedly used by Maher Assad, Assef Shawqat and two Syrian strongmen, Syrian interior minister Gen. Ghazi Kenaan and director of Syrian Special Intelligence Gen. Rusoum Ghazaleh, and other Syrian intelligence officers for contacts with their Lebanese accomplices who staged the bombing-shooting attack in Beirut last February. These accomplices set up a headquarters in the Hamara district in two apartments. Four senior Lebanese security officers are also in detention over the crime.
Diplomatic efforts are underway (by Egypt and Saudi Arabia) to prevent any report to the U.N. that directly points the finger at Bashar Assad. If that effort is successful, Assad will have to throw his close relatives to the wolves to protect himself. It isn't likely that they'll go quietly. If Assad makes some huge concessions (along the lines of what we saw with Libya), we may see this whole thing covered up. Watch and see what happens with this.
Egypt has lost control of 20% of its Sinai peninsula to al Qaeda in the past year. Al Qaeda has established local terror networks in northern Sinai – centering on el Arish, as well as strongholds in the inaccessible central mountains of the peninsula around Jebel Hillal. In all, the jihadists control roughly one-fifth of Sinai total area (23,500sq. miles). Egyptian forces of law and order have learned not to venture into these bastions or into the areas commanded by age-old smuggler clans who currently collaborate with al Qaeda. This leaves about half of the forbidding desert peninsula inaccessible to Egyptian security forces. The landscape conceals terrorist bomb traps and roadside devices. Gunmen armed with RPG and anti-tank weapons lurk behind huge rocks in wait for any Egyptian police or security unit daring to step off a main road into one of the dry valleys dissecting the forbidding peaks. Al Qaeda’s Sinai bastion is better fortified than the original Tora Bora. It is peopled with more fighters and is even more impregnable. The paths leading up to peaks – some as tall as 7,500 ft - are barricaded by huge rocks under which explosive snares are concealed. Attempts to move the rocks would set off explosions and start an avalanche. Interspersed among the natural barriers are bomb traps and anti-personnel and anti-tank mines. The caves perforating the slopes are firing positions - some armed with mortars and heavy machine guns. The Egyptian have tried large-scale assaults on the al Qaeda mountain fastnesses and failed. They were forced to retreat with heavy casualties. The Egyptian government does not WANT to serve as a host for al Qaeda, but it lacks the military might and the necessary resolve to take back the Sinai. So far, they aren't even admitting they have a problem.
There have been some interesting changes in the tactics of terrorism in Iraq in recent weeks. Abu Musab al Zarqawi's al Qaeda fighters have virtually discontinued their attacks on US soldiers. When American forces approach towns or positions held by Zarqawi’s men, such as Dulaym al-Husayba, Karabila or Sada in Western Iraq, the terrorists fire scattered warning shots to drive the Americans off, but refrain from attacking them. If US troops nonetheless advance, Zarqawi’s men melt away without engaging them or even planting ambushes. This pattern of non-combat has been noted in a number of places in Iraq. Some of the Iraqi Sunni guerrilla groups have followed al Qaeda’s lead and stopped attacking American soldiers. Instead, both the Iraqi insurgents and al Qaeda operatives are concentrating their fire on Iraqi targets – Shiite Muslims, government institutions, members of parliament and members of Iraqi military and security arms.
Despite those facts, attacks on American targets have persisted, and U.S. commanders began asking who, if not Iraqi insurgents, were mounting the assaults. US intelligence officers put that question to captured guerilla fighters. The answer was surprising. Iraqi fighters admitted that Iranian intelligence agents posted undercover in Iraq had paid them to attack American troops. The agents had approached them with sizeable sums of cash and a list of US targets. Some Iraqi Sunni groups were finding that it paid handsomely to act as contract killers for Iranian intelligence. It appears that the U.S. soldiers dying in bombings in Iraq these days are the targets of Iranian contract killings, not victims of al Qaeda or Iraqi insurgents. It seems odd that the Bush administration is keeping that information secret. Read more at Debka Net Weekly. (subscription required)
Boy, talk about religious hypocrisy. Jim and Jenni Deans have lived in a quiet Ottawa suburb for more than 10 years and have operated an amateur adult website for three years without incident. But all that changed recently after a religiious neighbor looking for porn joined the site, recognized features of the Deans’ home and decided to launch a campaign to harass the couple out of what Jim Deans describes as a postcard-perfect small town. The neighbor contacted local authorities in the hopes of shutting down his website, but authorities did not take any action. So, the neighbor enlisted the help of his local church in his crusade, and there have since been leaflets posted around town calling for protests against the Deans. Since then, Dean has been receiving harassing phone calls and his hot tub was vandalized.I don't understand any bit of this. The guy's out looking for porn on the Internet, happens to find a local website, and goes on a rampage to shut it down? Why? And the good church-going folk making threatening phone calls and vandalizing Dean's property, what's that about? Is that what Jesus would do? Don't they teach love and stuff like that in Christian churches anymore? The only good side to this whole thing is that Dean's website sales have skyrocketed since the local churchfolk learned about his porn site. Maybe I should contrive to bring this blog to the attention of the churches around here.
Mullah Pat Robertson has issued a fatwah calling for the murder of
Salmon RushdieVenezuelan President Hugo Chavez. A few weeks ago, he told 863,000 of his 700 Club followers that "Killing Chavez would be a whole lot cheaper than starting a war." He added: "We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don't need another $200-billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with." -Today's thought from the American Taliban. It's interesting to learn that the clerics of the Religious Right are adopting the same practices as their counterparts in the Islamic Right. In the past, they took the view that murder is a sin. Pat Robertson has an interesting history. He once told his followers that a small nuclear device planted at the State Department would seriously improve this country's foreign policy. He warned that a meteor or a hurricane would wipe out Disney World if gays were allowed to hold a convention there. Despite horrifying human rights violations, Robertson and the brutal Mobuto Sese Seko of Zaire made a deal that made the 700 Club millions in a diamond mine fortune. In Robertson's book "The New World Order," he wrote about the "enlightened leadership" of Guatemala's former president Jorge Serrano. Serrano's enlightenment included the documented extrajudicial killings of more than 2,000 people by shootings, burnings alive, hackings to death and disembowelments, drownings and beheadings. The slain included old people, pregnant women and innocent children. Yet no matter how outrageous the pronouncements that come from Pat Robertson, an estimated million Americans send money to him every year to support his "ministry." Christian fascism is big business these days. Perhaps big enough to take the reins of our government, as they hope. Worked for Hitler, didn't it?Today's new adult galleries:
