I haven't been sleeping well lately, stressed about money. I've come to the conclusion that I must sell my house and move into a smaller place. I love my house. It's a 127 year-old Victorian in a nice neighborhood in a small town. Six bedrooms, three baths, big yard, lots of shade from big old trees. When I bought the house five years ago, I'd hoped this would be my last move. But my income has gone down since then, and my utility bills have gone up, drastically. I see the writing on the wall, and figure I'd better get it on the market sooner rather than later. I'm sad.
Last week, I noted that the killings of American soldiers in Iraq in recent weeks have been carried out by contract killers hired by Iran, rather than by insurgents or terrorists. I wondered why the Bush administration was keeping that fact a secret. It's not a secret anymore. British Prime Minister Tony Blair has come out with a statement that London has proof that Iran is paying Sunni groups to kill American soldiers and that Iran is passing weapons and explosives to them through the Lebanese Hizballah. It seems likely that the Americans will retaliate somehow against Iran. A likely target might be the Iranian Revolutionary Guard bases Iran has placed inside Iraq.
The FBI is recruiting for a new anti-porn squad. The new squad will divert eight agents, a supervisor and assorted support staff to gather evidence against "manufacturers and purveyors" of pornography -- not the kind exploiting children, but the kind that depicts, and is marketed to, consenting adults. Mischievous commentary began propagating around the water coolers at 601 Fourth St. NW and its satellites, where the FBI's second-largest field office concentrates on national security, high-technology crimes and public corruption. "I guess this means we've won the war on terror," said one exasperated FBI agent, speaking on the condition of anonymity because poking fun at headquarters is not regarded as career-enhancing. "We must not need any more resources for espionage." Among friends and trusted colleagues, an experienced national security analyst said, "it's a running joke for us."
Congress began funding the obscenity initiative in fiscal 2005 and specified that the FBI must divert 10 agents to adult pornography. I wonder if the funding includes the millions of tax dollars it costs to prosecute a porn case, with all the attendant First Amendment issues. I'd guess not. They're politicians. They can't look that far ahead. Their vision is limited to getting the votes of the religious fascists in the next election, regardless of cost or consequences.
Rape is so endemic in South Africa that a woman has invented a way to give a vagina teeth. Called "Rapex," the latex device inserted in the vagina latches on to a rapist's penis with fish-tooth-like hooks and can only be removed by a surgeon, forcing a rapist to go to a hospital, where the crime would presumably be uncovered. 52,000 rapes are reported each year in South Africa, and 40% of the victims are under 18. Since the South African society doesn't seem to deal with the issue of sexual assaults, it only makes sense to empower individuals to protect themselves. It may not be the best solution to the problem, but at least it IS a solution.
In Manatee County, Florida, local officials recently passed a law that requires employees at adult bookstores and sex shops to carry county-issued licenses while at work. County officials said the new rule, part of an adult entertainment ordinance enacted in May, will make adult businesses safer by screening employees for drug offenses or prostitution-related crimes. The new license rules were developed after a federal appeals court struck down the county’s earlier attempt to heavily regulate the adult industry in the county. If the object of the new licensing rules is to make businesses safer by ensuring that retail clerks don't have records for drugs or prostitution, I say require licensing for ALL employees at retail stores. I hate it when I proposition a pretty clerk at Walmart, and then she names a price. And wouldn't we all feel safer if we knew that none of the retail clerks we deal with daily do drugs?
