Porn and Safe Sex: Still a Recipe for HIV?

I think the thing to remember is that pornography is about pretending. People are pretending to have wild sex on screen. These people are being paid to have sex and show their bits. When I catch my kids looking at porn online I always explain to them that these are actors pretending to have passionate sex with each other. The viewer, like viewers of all types of movies, also pretends that it is real and they often sublimate themselves into the scene. This is why porn excites its audience; far more than it does its actual participants.

Porn is about fantasy and having all porn stars wear condoms by law will only send it back underground, as it was in the bad old days. You will see a return of snuff movies, narcotic addiction and sex slavery being rife in the porn industry. The contention that actors not having safe sex on screen sends the wrong message to its audience is not a definitive position. It is premised on the assumption that most people who watch porn are likely to be having unprotected sex with strangers. When, in fact, many people who watch porn are involved in long term intimate relationships. They watch porn to stimulate their sex lives through their imaginations.

Porn and Safe Sex: Still a Recipe for HIV?

As in the case of cigarette and alcohol sales, porn films and images could be emblazoned with a safe sex message beneath the action. In addition, as in the case of animal participation in films, a further message could address the safe sex position of the actors involved re-testing for HIV etc. Porn is, in my view, a digital safety valve for society, which can provide a safe outlet for sexual frustration in the majority of cases. Controlling everything only sends things underground and is a recipe for more virulent and damaging expressions of sexual energy to erupt in society.

Sex is better when you love the person you are fucking. That should be the message from governments and their various bodies. An emotional involvement in sex and when it truly becomes lovemaking knocks the socks off the short term sensationalism of a one night stand. Commercial interests cannot really sell that experience; although dating sites would like to claim that they make that possible for their members. Safe sex is a bit of a misnomer really; there is nothing safe about having sex whatever your circumstances.
